A Couple Weeks After Flood

Just a little break from my investment study today. I’ll talk about what’s happening around my life lately.
As you might already know, my city, Brisbane was hit by a flood a couple weeks ago. The worst flooding in 40 years. Australia’s third largest city was nothing like it’s usual sunny character. The dark muddy water from the Brisbane river suddenly became very invasive and swallowed the city center and surrounded suburbs. There were very upsetting news everywhere. I cut down the main media for a while so that I didn’t have to hear all the bad news over and over.

A couple weeks later, the city started to function. Thanks to so many people including volunteers who contributed their time to clean up the city, Brisbane is getting back its power. There are still some trace of the flood here and there, but the vitality of the city is recovering rapidly.

I was one of the fortunate members of the city who didn’t get affected by the flood. The continuous rain and sudden storms were a bid of worry but nothing serious was damaged. There was one time when ping-pong ball size hails fell off the sky, I was a bit scared. But it didn’t last long. No damage was done in my house. Also, there was another time the heavy rain made big puddles under my patio that I had to sweep water out of the walk way. That’s about it. My worst time of the last couple weeks. I wasn’t able to do any of garden work but I didn’t mind. I knew I can always wait for a sunny day to attack those overgrown weeds.

This week, the blue sky is back. I walked around the garden to check what needed to be done first. Weeds are growing so high and many veggies are ready to be picked. I also found some surprises that those rainy weeks brought for me.
Here is one of the surprises - watermelon, hidden behind mondo grass.

I’ve never watered it so far (I didn’t have to) because the rain took care of it for me.
and here is the other funny surprise - Tomato, growing out of my compost bin.

The stem is coming out of the air hole. I didn’t touch the bin on rainy days so it must had a chance to grow with enough moisture from rain.

They show me the good side of the rainy summer in Brisbane. I wouldn’t say the summer this year was totally horrible.
